Well I've just finished writing up the findings from my 3 days without texting and must say the challenge has inspired me. I can't wait to get going on the next one. I'm conscious not to leap straight into the big technology game-changers.....lose the phone for 6 days........no computer for 5 days (weeks? eek!). I don't want to end up feeling frustrated (which I would) or breaking my positive momentum so early into my one year mission.
So, what to do.....dare I give up coffee for 6 days? Hmmmm.
On another note, I am very happy to see some of the news emerging in the media these last couple of days around Cambridge University's research showing saturated fat and the fact it is NOT linked to heart disease. The misconception that it is shaped our diets and the world food industry for the last 30 or so years.....low fat this and fat free that. Along the way, the fat got replaced by sugar and the world got fatter, heart disease continues its rampage and cancer is ever more prevalent.
Earlier this month the World Health Organisation stated its intent to half its recommendations on daily sugar intake - from added sugar as well as naturally occurring sugar in fruit juice, honey & syrups (yes, even maple and agave). The momentum around sugar, specifically fructose, and its toxicity is gaining all the time. People are realising that it's not the fat that this bad, it's the sugar (in very broad terms) and that government guidelines, healthy diet pyramids.......they got it a bit wrong. That's pretty significant.
Trans fats are still nasty - found in deep frying, margarines, baked goods, biscuits etc but butter, lean meat, coconut oil (99.9% saturated fat) seems unlikely to give you heart disease based on this research. As far as sugar goes, I don't believe in totally quitting it but I do believe in being informed - especially if it's addictive nature and impact to the body is being used in the same sentence as tobacco and alcohol.
If you're interested, there is loads of information out there. This 60 minutes video is fascinating
